Capital Raising Activity on TSX and TSXV in 2014

January 22, 2015

In 2014, Canada's leading public equities markets, Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV), experienced strong growth in terms of overall equity capital raised. More than $52 billion in equity capital was raised on TSX in 2014, an increase of 32% from 2013. On TSXV, over $5 billion was raised by public venture companies last year, up 39% from 2013.

The top five industry sectors by total equity capital raised in 2014:

  1. Oil and gas: $11 billion
  2. Mining: $8.8 billion
  3. Utilities and pipelines: $8 billion
  4. Innovation*: $6.1 billion
  5. Diversified industries: $5.4 billion

From a global perspective, TSX and TSXV remained the preeminent markets for natural resources companies to list and raise capital in 2014. The Exchanges ranked #1 in the number of listed mining companies, #1 in the value of equity financing raised by mining companies for the year and #1 in the number of listed oil & gas companies.

Based on the World Federation of Exchanges' annual rankings, TSX and TSXV (combined) were 1st in North America by the total number of listed companies across all sectors, and stood 8th globally by market capitalization. Overall, TSX and TSXV were 6th in the world by equity capital raised in 2014. And since the start of 2012, more equity capital has been raised by companies listed on the Exchanges than by those listed on any of the major stock exchanges in London, Germany, Tokyo, Shanghai or Australia. Together, TSX and TSXV only trail the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NASDAQ and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange over this period.
